THE ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL SUPPLEMENT SERIES, 112:557, 1997 October CLASSIFICATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF IRAS SOURCES WITH LOW-RESOLUTION SPECTRA SUN KWOK AND KEVIN POLK Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada T2N 1N4 AND WILLIAM P. BIDELMAN Department of Astronomy, Case Western Reserve University, 10900 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106-7215 ABSTRACT IRAS low-resolution spectra were extracted for 11,224 IRAS sources. These spectra were classified into astrophysical classes, based on the presence of emission and absorption features and on the shape of the continuum. Counterparts of these IRAS sources in existing optical and infrared catalogs are identified, and their optical spectral types are listed if they are known. The correlations between the photospheric/ optical and circumstellar/infrared classifications are discussed. Subject headings: catalogs -- circumstellar matter -- infrared stars -- stars: AGB and post-AGB -- stars: fundamental parameters
